Joint Laboratory
On March 6, 2009, Prof. FAN Weiming, CAS Resource and Environment Bureau Director, XU Yigang, GIGCAS Vice President, Prof. AITCHISON Jonathan and Prof. SUN Min jointly unveiled the Joint Laboratory of Chemical Geodynamics funded by GIGCAS and Hong Kong University. This joint laboratory passed appraisal by the CAS expert panel in 2008, and was ranked 1st among the five joint laboratories newly approved by the Department of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs under CAS Resource and Environment Bureau. Through the platform of this joint laboratory, the two parties can jointly apply for research grants, graduate training, etc. Major outline of the joint laboratory Ever since 2000, GIGCAS has dispatched 17 researchers to Hong Kong University for either cooperative research or post-doc work for a tenure ranging from three months to one year. Likewise, Hong Kong University has also dispatched 70 plus researchers to GIGCAS for visiting, or cooperative research. Also, two GIGCAS-Hong Kong University academic symposia were held by the two parties in 2008 and 2009. GIGCAS has introduced three Ph.D. graduates who were graduated from the Department of Earth Sciences of Hong Kong University. Among them, Dr. Sun Yali and Dr. WANG Yan have been laureates of the CAS Program for 100 Outstanding Scientists, while Prof. YUAN Chao has been one of the leading scientists in GIGCAS. GIGCAS hired Prof. SUN Min, ZHOU Meifu and ZHAO Guochun, now faculty of the Department of Earth Sciences of Hong Kong University, to become its part-time researchers, who will cooperate with Profs. YUAN Chao, Sun Yali and ZHAO Taiping in jointly training eight graduate students. Many graduate students graduated from GIGCAS were admitted to Hong Kong University for either post-doc research or Ph.D. education. Ever since 2004, the two parties have published 29 SCI research papers, and co-edited a monograph published on LITHOS, an international core journal. Major cooperative projects secured by the two parties Team Project of Innovation team international cooperation partner program funded jointly by Chinese Academy of Sciences and State Bureau of Foreign Expert Affairs: Tectono-magmatism and mineralization system, to XU Yigang, SUN Min, ZHOU Meifu and so on (6.18 million yuan); State 973 Brainstorm Program 2nd Level Project: Mineralization forecast system and resource potential assessment, to SUN Min, YUAN Chao and WANG Qiang (Grant No. 2007CB411308, 2.28 million yuan); State 973 Brainstorm Program 2nd Level Project: Mineralization of Emeishan Large Igneous Province, to ZHOU Meifu, HE Bin and so on (Grant no. 2007CB 411401, 2.50 million yuan). Major cooperative achievements by the two parties 1) Emeishan Large Igneous Province and its mineralization dynamics 2) Continental geodynamic processes and mineralization in the sub-orogen of Central Asian orogen |
