On October 26 2010, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIGCAS) and Guangzhou Environmental Monitoring Centre (GMEC) held a ceremony on site of GEMC to announce the joint effort by the two bodies of establishing the GIGCAS-GMEC Joint Laboratory for Urban Atmospheric Environment. Professor Yigang Xu, director general of GIGCAS, and Mr Shaoyi Wang, director of GMEC, signed the agreement. CAS academician professor Jia-mo Fu and Mr Hongdu Ding, director of Guangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau (GZEPB) unveiled the joint laboratory.
In his speech upon the ceremony, Mr Ding acknowledged the contribution that GIGCAS had made to the environmental protection in Guangzhou. He regarded the setup of the joint laboratory as a sign for the comprehensive and cooperative partnership between the two bodies, which will help GMEC to further build its capacity both in environmental monitoring and scientific research in the near future.
Professor Xu affirmed the fruitful collaboration between GMEC and GUGCAS, and pointed out the significance of integrating the state-of-the-art smog chamber, a 30 cubic meter indoor simulation facility in GIGCAS, with the advanced super-station for atmospheric environment monitoring in GMEC. He urged that GIGCAS, now allying with GMEC, should take this as a new starting point to better identify and seek solutions for key scientific problems in urban atmospheric pollution monitoring and control. He believes that the sharing of technical platforms between GIGCAS and GMEC will be of mutual benefit in both scientific research and capacity building.
The two bodies also signed an agreement to make GMEC a PDRA research base for postdoctoral research associates from GIGCAS.
