Chinese Isotope Geochemist Receives CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Award TEXT SIZE: A A A
The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) announced 16 winners of 2023 CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars on May 23, 2023. Prof. LIN Mang from the State Key Laboratory of Isotope Geochemistry at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is among the list.

The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars program recognizes outstanding early-career researchers with the potential of being future research leaders in their fields by supporting their efforts in tackling important questions facing science and humanity. Over the past seven years, about 6% of eligible applicants have been selected to join the program. Representing a wide range of disciplines and countries, the Scholars will participate for two years in one of CIFAR’s research programs and receive $100,000 CAD for unrestricted use in research. Prof. LIN Mang will join the program “Earth 4D: Subsurface Science & Exploration” with two fellow awardees this year from the University of California San Diego (US) and Queen’s University (Canada).

According to CIFAR, the multidisciplinary team of the Earth 4D program draws on geology, chemistry, planetary science, and engineering to investigate the interactions between the subsurface and the surface on Earth. The team seeks to inform and expand understanding of planetary evolution and the possibility of finding life elsewhere. LIN Mang received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California San Diego in 2018. His research focuses on isotope chemistry and its use in Earth and planetary sciences, with particular interests in the origins and evolutions of planetary habitability and life. He has published more than 40 papers, including seven in PNAS.

“This award is a great honor and opportunity for me. I will be able to exchange ideas and collaborate with the world’s smartest scientists in various research fields,” said LIN.

Founded in 1982, CIFAR is a leader in the global research community. As its website suggests, more than 1,000 researchers from over 30 countries have contributed to CIFAR’s research programs as fellows, advisors, Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, and CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars over the years. This community of researchers is regularly recognized with major research awards including the Breakthrough Prize, the Turing Award, the K?rber European Science Prize, and the Nobel Prize.
