State Key Laboratory of Deep Earth Processes and Resources (DEEPER)
The State Key Laboratory of Deep Earth Processes and Resources (DEEPER), officially established in 2025, is a major research division under GIGCAS. DEEPER has been formed through the integration of several prestigious research entities: the former State Key Laboratory of Isotope Geochemistry, the petroleum and gas research groups of the former State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, the CAS Key Laboratory of Mineralogy and Metallogeny, and the GIGCAS branch of the CAS Key Laboratory of Ocean and Marginal Sea Geology.
Committed to advancing the understanding of deep-Earth science and supporting the growing demand for mineral resources, DEEPER is engaged in research across four major fields: 1) Deep-Earth interior structure and elemental distribution, 2) Deep-Earth processes and elemental cycling, 3) Interaction between Earth’s interior and surface and their roles in mineral resource formation, and 4) Mineral deposit exploration and prediction technologies.
DEEPER has a solid foundation in the study of deep-Earth processes, Earth system evolution, and the formation of critical metal, petroleum and gas resources. Its laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical facilities and high-pressure/high-temperature experimental equipment. These advanced instruments support four core research platforms: elemental and isotopic geochemistry, organic geochemistry, mineral textures and morphologies, and experimental petrology.
To further strengthen its multidisciplinary research capabilities, DEEPER is actively expanding into geophysical observation and numerical modelling. As an internationally oriented research center, DEEPER welcomes collaboration with scientists from around the world. Opportunities are also available to researchers and scholars who wish to join and contribute to DEEPER’s mission.
