Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory for Environmental Pollution and Control
Established in 2018, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory for Environmental Pollution and Control is a major collaborative research platform between GIGCAS and the Faculty of Construction and Environment at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as well as one of the 22 accredited joint laboratories between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and universities in Hong Kong.
The Joint Laboratory is dedicated to tackling major environmental challenges in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), highlighting research on: (1) Formation mechanisms and control strategies for atmospheric secondary pollution in urban agglomerations; (2) Chemical pollution and its impact on human health; (3) Ecological risks associated with emerging pollutants; (4) Remediation of complex contaminated urban soils; and (5) Advanced water treatment and reuse technologies.
Leveraging national and regional initiatives, such as the National Key R&D Program of China and Hong Kong’s Theme-based Research Scheme, the Joint Laboratory investigates pollution dynamics and health effects under the GBA’s unique context of land-sea interactions, overlapping anthropogenic and natural sources, and complex meteorological conditions. The Joint Laboratory is poised to become a world-class research platform in the field of environmental pollution prevention and control.
