Yi-Gang Xu graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Geochemistry from Zhejiang University in 1987, Ph.D. in Geochemistry from University of Paris 7 in 1994. After the Postdoctoral Research at the Royal Holloway University of London, he joined GIGCAS in 1996 and had served as institute director general between 2008-2021. He is now professor and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Isotope Geochemistry. Yi-Gang is an expert on igneous petrology and geochemistry, and made contributions to mantle dynamics and magma genesis, in particular on the destruction of North China Craton, formation and evolution of large igneous provinces, and nature and dynamics of the Big Mantle wedge. He is the author of >300 publications, 270 of which in peer-reviewed international journals with total citations of over 27000 and h-index of 87 by Google Scholar. He was ranked in World’s Top 2% Scientists 2020 and Top 200 Chinese Scientists (Mendeley Data).

Yi-Gang has been the recipient of a number of awards throughout his career, beginning as an NSFC Outstanding Youth Scientist, of two National Natural Science Awards, and most recently being elected Academician of the CAS and Fellows of the GSA, AGU and GS/EAG.
