Research Interests:
In order to better understand the composition and evolution of the Earth’s mantle, and the trans-crustal transportation of mantle-derived magmas, my research group studies the major, trace, volatile element abundances as well as radiogenic and stable isotopic compositions of volcanic rocks erupted at mid-ocean ridges, arcs and back-arc basins. The questions that we’d like to answer from such studies include:
  1. What is the composition of convecting upper mantle?
  2. What is the role of subduction in deep Earth volatile cycles?
  3. What are the transport rates of mantle-derived magma at different settings and their primary controls?

Currently, our main research areas include but are not limited to:
  1. Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic Ocean
  2. Southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean
  3. Iceland and Mid-Atlantic Ridge
  4. Izu-Bonin-Mariana arc and Mariana Trough
  5. Tonga arc and Lau Basin
  6. South Sandwich arc and Scotia Basin
