Key Laboratory of Mineralogy and Metallogeny TEXT SIZE: A A A

The Key Laboratory of Mineralogy and Metallogeny, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was established in 2010. It is an integrated laboratory featured by distinguished research on mineralogy and ore deposits, based on previous related study fields in the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry. In 2014 and 2019, our laboratory was evaluated in the front level among CAS similar laboratories in Earth Sciences. Currently we have 47 employees, including 13 full professors and 22 associated professors. Among these researchers, 4 people were awarded as the National Distinguished Young Scholars, one person as the Excellent Young Scholars by NSFC, and one person as the Guangdong Provincial Excellent Young Scholars. One person was chosen as the Chief Scientist of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program) and one for the National Key R&D Program. Two people were assigned as the Editor-in-Chief for the two international journals, Applied Clay Science and Ore Geology Reviews, respectively.

Our laboratory is aimed on the pioneering scientific research on mineralogy and metallogeny. Using integrated methods including micro-analysis, mineral spectrum, isotope, experimental geochemistry and calculation-simulation, we study structure-morphology-modification-effects of minerals and source-transportation-precipitation-perseveration-modification of ore metals, to uncover the ore genesis mainly during slab subduction and mantel plume events and its application on ore prospecting. Meanwhile, we also explore and verify the variable industry applications of minerals, to make not only the breakthrough in the scientific research on solid earth sciences, but also the contribution for the sustainable development of China. Our recent research have been focused on three major fields, including 1) structure and surface-interface interaction of minerals; 2) genesis of minerals and ore deposits; 3) Ore prospecting and utilization of environmental minerals.

In the recent five years (2014-2018), researchers in our laboratory have been funded by 197 projects, including 2 National key R&D program projects, one National 973 project, some key projects from NSFC and others with similar level. The total funds are over than 380 M (RMB), indicating a strong competitive strength and good service for the society. In the past five years, we have published 674 peer-reviewed papers, including 526 SCI papers; 8 books and 20 patents (including 16 invention patents). We have been rewarded with 6 provincial (and similar level) academic awards based on our research.

Our laboratory currently owns over 20 major facilities related to mineralogy and ore deposit studies, which can be furtherly grouped into five analytical platforms, including 1) Structure and morphology of minerals; 2) High-temperature and pressure experimental mineralogy study; 3) Fluid inclusion analysis; 4) Element/isotope geochemistry; 5) Deep exploration technology of ore deposits. The key instruments in our laboratory include TEM, SEM, LA-ICP-MS, EMPA, LA-Raman, XRD, and EH-4, which can satisfy our research fields and also provide service for other research units.
